What is the Caesar Cipher Tool?

The Caesar cipher is one of the oldest secret codes. Each letter is moved a fixed number of places in the alphabet. With a shift of 3, A becomes D and B becomes E.

Choose a shift and encode your message, or decode one you received. If you do not know the shift, pick "Try all shifts" and look for the line that makes sense. It is a fun puzzle tool, but not real security.

How to use it

  1. Pick Encode, Decode or Try all shifts.
  2. Type or paste your message and set the shift.
  3. Copy the result from the right box.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Caesar cipher?
It is a code where every letter is shifted by the same number of places in the alphabet. It is named after Julius Caesar, who used a shift of 3.
How do I decode a Caesar cipher without the key?
Choose "Try all shifts". Only 25 are possible, so one of the lines will read as normal words.
Is the Caesar cipher secure?
No. It can be broken in seconds. Use it for puzzles and learning, never for real secrets.
What is ROT13?
ROT13 is a Caesar cipher with a shift of 13. Use our ROT13 tool for it.
